Weather stations all around our region show a beautiful spring day with most locations experiencing temperatures in the 40's and few sites toping 50 degrees. As we head into the overnight hours the warm and clear weather should stay with us. Inversions will likely form in many of the mountain valleys and passes, but with such warm air in place, temperatures will struggle to dip very far. Most sites should see temperatures near or even above freezing. The high-pressure ridge responsible for this streak of nice weather will shift further inland tonight. This will allow for a few more high clouds and slightly cooler air to slide into the area especially for the Olympics and North Cascades. Expect ridgeline winds to increase as the general flow becomes more west to southwesterly.
This pattern continues into Thursday. Without the protection of the high-pressure, bands of high clouds continue to shove their way into the area. As the jet stream positions itself more overhead, we should continue to see mountain winds increasing and becoming strong for locations like Mt Baker, the Wenatchee Mts, and Mt Hood. Temperatures will cool slightly as the warmest area moves east, but this will not be a significant cooldown. Freezing levels should remain above 5000 to 7500 ft for most of our mountain trailheads.
The cooling trend continues Thursday night and Friday as a shortwave system passes to our north. While a few stray showers may clip the Olympic Pennisula or North Cascades, this will primarily result in increasing clouds and slightly cooler temperatures for most locations. However, the exit of the ridge and repositioning of the jet stream marks the start of a pattern change.

Extended Weather Synopsis
As we head into the weekend, a pattern change should bring more unsettled weather to the Northwest. An elongated trough in the Pacific could send weak systems in our direction. Weather models seem to be struggling with the specifics of timing and strength of these short-waves. However, the trend of cooler and cloudier weather appears more certain.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
