BRRRR! It's cold outside this afternoon. Nearly all of our weather stations continue to report temperatures in the single digits or low teens. Expect very cold weather to persist overnight and into the weekend. With such cold temperatures, make sure to cover up your skin. Frostbite and other cold-related injuries can occur quickly with wind chill values well below 0F.
Radar images currently show a band of snow showers blanketing the southern portion of our forecast area on both sides of the Cascades. This trend should continue overnight as the associated low-pressure system drifts down the Oregan coast and into California. Expect low elevation and mountain snow in locations south of I90, while areas closer to the Canadian border see partly cloudy to mostly clear skies. As the weather system travels further south, easterly winds should decrease slightly, but continue to drive offshore flow.
A very weak and short-lived high-pressure ridge will quickly pass over the area on Friday but do little to change the general pattern in the weather. Snow showers should continue for the southern and eastern zones. An approaching trough will continue to drive easterly winds across the Cascade crest. This system should arrive Friday evening and spread snow across all of the Pacific Northwest. While the jet stream helps focus the bulk of the precipitation on areas towards the south, this system should return snow to the North Cascades. On Saturday, the deepening trough will push additional snow over the mountains to areas further east and maintain the cold and snowy weather into the first part of the weekend.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The very cold and snowy theme continues into the long-range forecast. The deep trough responsible for Saturday's precipitation pushes further east as we move into early Sunday morning. This should transition the precipitation to snow showers along the western slopes of the Cascades. However, don't expect too much of a break. A series of short-wave weather systems ahead of a larger low-pressure appear to keep the weather active, the mountains snowy, and temperatures cold.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
