The quasi-stationary frontal boundary that has been draped west of the Cascade crest since Saturday evening is still with us this afternoon, like a house guest that doesn't know when it's time to move along. Snow levels have settled in the 4000-6000' range across the region this afternoon. 2 day precipitation totals have varied widely in this pattern; 5.40" at Mt Baker, 2.80" at Hurricane Ridge, 1.75" Crystal Mt, 0.75" Mission Ridge and generally less than 0.50" everywhere else.
The parent surface low will finally head inland this evening with a secondary wave developing along the boundary in northern California. This should stretch the boundary with most of the precipitation focused on the north Cascades once again as it lifts NE late this evening. A wind shift from S-SE to W-SW will take place around midnight behind the frontal boundary. Snow levels will slowly lower later tonight.
Post-frontal showers will be with us tomorrow as the upper-level low drops south along the coast. Showers should fire up tomorrow afternoon as the air mass becomes more unstable in the afternoon and an upper level shortwave invigorates showers activity in the afternoon. Snow levels will hover in the 2000-3000' range tomorrow and skies will remain cloudy.
The trailing upper level trough will dig along the Oregon Coast Tuesday night and head inland on Wednesday. This should rotate a swatch of light snow into the southern Washington Cascades, Olympics and Mt Hood Tuesday night through Wednesday morning with less snow further north and east. A drying trend will take place on Wednesday. Clouds will stick around on the west side of the Cascade crest with more sunshine along the east slopes with cool freezing levels and generally light winds.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A pair of upper level disturbances will slide down late Wednesday night through Friday, bringing more precipitation for the west slopes of the Cascades in NW flow aloft. Snow levels will slowly rise toward the end of the work week as warmer air works inland with a strong ridge building well offshore around 135W.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
