The cool upper trough influencing our weather this week continues to weaken as the trough axis moves onshore over the Pacific Northwest Thursday night. Light bands of snowfall primarily over northern Washington are most likely to bring a few inches of accumulating low-density snowfall to the Mt Baker area as they weaken and continue to lift away from the region on light SSW flow aloft. With partially clearing skies in many areas overnight, temperatures should cool off into the teens and low twenties in many mountain locations.
Friday should be a dry day in most areas with a mix of clouds and sun. Clouds should increase late in the day ahead of a modest trough with light snow reaching the western Olympic Mountains late in the day.
Light snowfall should spread throughout the forecast region Friday night as SSW winds pick up into the moderate range. The heaviest snow and strongest winds are likely in the Mt. Baker area. The front should remain over the region on Saturday with light snowfall continuing in similar areas.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The leading edge of a deep trough reaches the coastline and merges with a stalled and weakening frontal band on Saturday night, putting our region on the active downstream side of the trough. Expect increasing light to moderate rain and snow, particularly for the Olympic Mountains and Coast areas Saturday night. SSW flow continues with light E flow at the surface on Sunday as the leading edge of the trough shifts eastward. Moderate rain and snow should focus on the Cascades volcanoes. Sunday night, precipitation intensifies across the region as models indicate the development of a surface low aiming for Vancouver Island. The trough manages to tap into some subtropical moisture which is likely to bring snow levels to an apex slightly above Snoqualmie Pass level by Sunday night. On Monday, the heavier moisture lingers into the morning hours and gradually exits as the trough axis approaches our nearshore water and a cooler, showery regime takes over.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
