A deep trough off the west coast of the US gradually shifts east, directing the more active weather toward California. SSW upper-level flow ahead of the trough will lift a weak circulation center northward along the coast, spreading another band of generally light snowfall across our region Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The setup appears fairly similar to Tuesday night with southerly winds aloft, but lighter E winds near the surface. Temperatures remain cold, so expect high snow-to-water ratios once again focusing on the E slopes of the Cascades, Olympics, and volcanoes. These areas can expect another 3-6" of snow, while central Cascade passes might only pick up 1-2".
The surface feature associated with Wednesday night's precipitation fizzles off the Washington Coast Thursday morning as periods of light snowfall gradually giving way to partial sunshine from south to north.
Thursday night, the energy associated with the trough has formed a cutoff low in the California near-shore waters. The northerly remnants of the trough move over the region with partly cloudy skies and a chance of lingering snow flurries remaining with below normal temperatures.
On Friday, light E flow at low-levels shifts back westerly by the afternoon as the next front approaches. Expect partly cloudy skies becoming mostly cloudy late in the day. After a cool start, temperatures should moderate to near seasonal norms.

Extended Weather Synopsis
WSW flow increases Friday night as a weakening frontal system moves into the region, spreading increasing light snow. The front should move through during the early morning hours on Saturday with light post-frontal snow showers. A deep, cold trough digs into the offshore waters on Saturday, shifting flow SWerly late in the day. The leading edge of the trough should bring increasing snowfall on SSW flow as waves of moderate rain and snow move into the region with snow levels rising to near seasonal norms. East flow should keep the passes plenty cold for snow.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
