Northerly flow weakens Monday night as an offshore ridge flattens and the axis shifts over the Pacific Northwest early Tuesday. The northerly flow aloft with a ridge offshore allows cool air to pool east of the Cascade Crest while freezing levels rise west of the Cascade Crest. Low-level winds shift easterly spilling the cool air east of the mountains through the mountain gaps into the mid-day hours Tuesday. Expect a low-level inversion for the first half of the day Tuesday in the passes. Having sent most of its moisture into northern British Columbia, the weakening trail end of a frontal system approaches from the NW later Tuesday bringing light but increasing WSW ridgeline winds out ahead of it. Widespread mid-level clouds with some filtered sunshine can be expected during the day Tuesday. The front arrives Tuesday evening spreading some very light rain and snow at 3000-4000 ft snow levels as it passes south and fizzles by Wednesday morning. Less than a tenth of water equivalent can be expected in all areas. Moderate ridgeline winds and strong gusts can be expected east of the Cascade crest in favored down-slope locations late Tuesday and Tuesday night.
Wednesday should be dry and cool with mostly cloudy skies and decreasing clouds in the afternoon. Winds should also decrease and become variable late in the day.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A split flow pattern is expected to develop Wednesday night into early Thursday, bringing our region generally quiet weather with light winds. We expect some light snow showers developing from mid-day Thursday through Thursday evening, associated with a cutoff upper low dropping south. It may end up on a track too far offshore to bring more than some clouds and shifting winds. Behind this feature, low-level E flow should develop as cooler Canadian air works into the region east of the Cascade Crest. Friday appears mostly dry with NNE flow aloft.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
