Weather Synopsis

The main frontal boundary has kicked east of the Cascades this afternoon. A trailing upper level feature is passing into western Oregon and will spread generally light precipitation to Mt Hood and the south Washington Cascades late this afternoon and evening.

Later tonight we'll finally have an upper level ridge move over the area providing us with a dry 18 hours through Thursday afternoon. There should be a mix of sun and clouds Thursday morning before high clouds from the next system bring about overcast skies in the afternoon. A deep low pressure system well offshore will create strong offshore gradients over the region. Expect strong SE winds to develop for Stevens Pass down to Mt Hood in the afternoon and Thursday night in advance of the system. Before the cool offshore ramps up Thursday, look for snow levels to pop in the early afternoon for areas near and west of the Cascade crest.

The parent low will lift NE well into B.C. Thursday night and the frontal system will weaken as it approaches the Pacific Northwest.  SE winds will peak Thursday evening for the same aforementioned areas and light precipitation will move in towards daybreak Friday. There should be an increase in clouds and light snow along the east slopes of the Cascades and Passes due to upslope flow (ESE ahead of the system) Thursday night.

The front will pass through on Friday with a switch to west flow and generally light precipitation amounts smeared across the region.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Dry weather will take hold for the first half of the weekend as upper-level ridging briefly builds in. Forecast models disagree on the timing and strength of the frontal system for Saturday night and Sunday. Currently, the frontal system looks like a light to moderate precipitation event with higher precipitation totals likely near the Mt Baker area.

Previous forecast from Jan 6, 2021

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
