Weather Synopsis

A strong front will move across the region tonight with heavy rain and snow, strong ridgeline winds, and rapid cooling at the tail end of the precipitation. The front is associated with a deep low moving into southeast Alaska. Snow levels should peak in the evening hours in the 4000-5000 ft range before dropping below Snoqualmie Pass level by morning. Following heavy rain and snow on Saturday, we're expecting another 1-2.5" of water equivalent for the west slopes of the Cascades and Washington Pass, with less for other locations along the east slopes of the Cascades and Hurricane Ridge.

Weak convergence activity may bring some light convergence activity after the front passes through the morning hours. A weak disturbance will enhance light snow showers for northern Washington from the mid-day onwards, with Mt. Baker likely to pick up 2-5" of colder snow. Temperatures on Sunday will be closer to seasonal norms with highs in the upper 20's at 5000 ft.

After a brief relative break on Sunday, light snow starts up by evening in the Mt. Hood area ahead of an Occluded system. In this case, the warm front, cold front, and occluded front attached to the low converge over W Washington as the package lifts NNE across the region Sunday night into Monday, bringing another round of moderate rain and snow which may be heavy for the volcanoes. Precipitation is likely to be heaviest on Monday through early afternoon before the cold front crosses the Cascades late in the day. East flow is likely to keep the passes cold enough for snow until a changeover is likely for Snoqualmie pass sometime in the late morning hours.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A quick-moving trough passes over the region bringing light rain/snow showers and cooler temperatures on a westerly flow Monday night. A shallow ridge gives the region a drier day on Tuesday. A N-S oriented front brings SSW flow, significant warming west of the Cascade Crest, and moderate to heavy rain and snow from late Tuesday night into early Wednesday with a weak trough and light showers to follow by mid-day Wednesday.

Previous forecast from Jan 2, 2021

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
