Weather Synopsis for Tuesday & Tuesday
A well-defined N-S oriented and progressive cold front is crossing the Puget sound at 7 AM on Tuesday morning. A band of moderate to heavy precipitation with moderate SSE winds ahead of will pass through the Cascades through 10-11 AM. Snow levels are dropping rapidly with the onset of precipitation and the passes are starting near freezing or below with easterly flow, so this should be a snow event in most areas. A cool upper trough moves in quickly behind the front with strong convective, showery precipitation that has reached the coastline and should fill into the region shortly after the frontal passage with a shift to SW winds. The trough should bring a pulse a sustained period of slightly stronger winds (moderate, potentially strong in places). The trough axis crosses the region on Tuesday evening with winds switching westerly and bringing heavier snow to the Cascade Passes. The snowfall on Tuesday should favor Baker and Paradise, but as winds switch more westerly Tuesday night, the Cascade passes should also get heavy snowfall.
Post-frontal westerly winds should gradually decrease late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as precipitation also becomes lighter by Wednesday morning. A strong warm front approaches the region from the south and should bring heavy rain and snow along with rising snow levels working northward from Mt. Hood and the southern Washington Cascades spreading into the northern Washington Cascades by the afternoon. Expect substantial warming late in the day for Mt. Hood.
