Weather Synopsis for Monday night through Wednesday
A sharp frontal system will produce a significant winter storm impacting the Pacific Northwest Monday night, with a frontal passage during the early morning hours and slightly later for Mt. Hood. Winds and moderate to occasionally heavy snowfall will move southward with the frontal system arriving from the NW. SSW winds have been strong to extreme in the Mt. Baker area on Monday afternoon. The higher momentum air will move southward ahead of the front and will decrease and switch westerly with the frontal passage with the Mt. Hood area getting the strongest winds after midnight. This storm will be a major snow producer with many areas of the Cascades west slopes approaching 1 ft of snowfall overnight, with light to moderate snow showers continuing during the day on Tuesday, with locally heavy convergence bands developing late in the day as snow shower activity becomes less widespread. The shower activity will be under a sharp trough over the Pacific northwest feeding cold unstable air and moisture. Snow showers and convergence bands will continue through Tuesday night and generally end Wednesday morning. The post-frontal component of this storm will be quite significant with some areas receiving another foot of snowfall. Clouds are likely to linger west of the Cascade Crest on Wednesday.
