Weather Synopsis for Saturday night through Friday

An upper low dropping south of the Washington Coast in NW flow afloft will merge with the southern and stronger branch of the jet stream aimed into Oregon. This pattern will hold for several days, continuing the well below normal temperatures across the region.

A low pressure system quickly developing off the Oregon coast will bring increasing snow to the Mt. Hood area and to a lesser extent the south Washington Cascades later tonight, passing inland late Sunday morning. Light snowfall should reach into the central Washington Cascades and transition to scattered showers in the afternoon. Along the east slopes of the Cascades and at Hurricane Ridge Sunday, N-NE winds will help keep conditions generally cloudy with light upslope enhancement of the snowfall. The Mt. Baker area should see the least amount of snow but also has the best chance of sunbreaks. For the Washington Cascades, moderate easterly winds up to Cascade crest level should develop overnight but then back off during the day.

Just as showers decrease Sunday night, the next developing system will once again bring snowfall to Mt. Hood and the far Washington Cascades. Some forecast models are indicating that moisture may sneak further north to spread the wealth (in terms of snowfall) around.
