Weather Synopsis for Thursday & Sunday

Today is the last day of fair weather before we enter another cold and snowy pattern. A splitting Pacific frontal system offshore will fail to break down shortwave upper level ridging over the area which is keeping us dry, but it will manage to send some high clouds over the region today. Temperatures along the west slopes of the Cascades and Olympics have moderated a bit this morning. That slight moderation will carry through the afternoon with freezing levels forecast above sea level for most areas for the first time in awhile.

The northern branch of the jet stream will take over tonight with an upper level trough upstream over British Columbia beginning to slide south toward our region. The surface reflection of the upper level trough will be a developing surface low pressure system off of Vancouver Island that slowly slides south off the Washington coastline on Friday.

This will translate into light snow developing for the Olympics and north Cascades after midnight tonight, and light snow spreading south for all areas during the day. Cold temperatures will help squeeze out high snowfall ratios from water amounts that would otherwise appear unimpressive over the next few days
