Weather Synopsis for Tuesday & Wednesday

A broad upper trough over much of Canada has pushed south over the Pacific Northwest by Tuesday morning bringing much cooler and more seasonal temperatures.

A cool and slightly unstable air mass is bringing intermittent snow showers to the Olympics and Cascades on a moderate W-SW flow with some slight "snow shadowing" from the Olympic mountains likely reducing snow shower activity in the central Cascades on Tuesday morning. The forecast region will continue to see snow shower activity at low snow levels for the duration of Tuesday through Wednesday night with a very gradual decrease in the shower activity with time as the westerly flow begins to weaken and warmer air aloft begins working into the region making the air mass more stable as a ridge starts building offshore.

On Tuesday, snow showers will be generally light with shorter bursts of moderate intensity, but some heavier bands are possible, particularly in convergence near Mt. Baker on Tuesday evening. The Tuesday through Tuesday night time frame will generally bring 6-12" snow totals at the Cascade passes with Paradise and Mt. Baker getting closer to 12" and Crystal and Washington Pass picking up 6" or less.

Snowfall totals Wednesday through Wednesday are expected to be slightly lower with less than 6" at most sites, except in the central Cascades where 6-8" are likely at Snoqualmie and Stevens passes.
